Safehold

***This series is science fiction, and those who are not fans of the genre will want to stop reading here. For those who enjoy Science fiction, this series is a must-read***

A Little Background of the Series:

Welcome to Safehold! The planet where humans went to hide and survive from the alien race called Gbaba who were determined to annihilate all human life. It is believed that the Gbaba were able to find all established colonies by tracking electronic emissions. The plan for the planet of Safehold was to stay at pre-industrial technology for 900 years before reintroducing high-tech technology to resume the war and hopefully beat the Gbaba once in for all.
However, the plan's administrator Eric Langhorn and his command crew changed the plan. The command crew altered the colonists' memories, making them believe that when they awaken, they are waking up in the first moment of creation. Langhorn also tied technology to religion by creating the Church of God Awaiting to prevent humans from continuing to develop technology and encountering the Gbaba again.
900 years after 'creation', a robot belonging to Lieutenant Commander Nimue Alban, awakens. Nimue's mission is to overthrow the Church of God Awaiting, warn humankind of the threat of the Gbaba, and restore high-level technology to humankind.

At The Sign of Triumph

I just finished reading the 9th installment of the Safehold series. I loved the complex political intrigue, the character development, and watching Nimue Alban's mission coming closer to completion. It's been 9 long books of war and conflict. It's hard to believe while the war against the Church of God Awaiting is over yet there's still so much that still needs to happen. I don't know how David Weber will tie up all the loose ends in the next and final book, and I can't wait to find out. I'd say more, but I don't want to spoil it too much for those who haven't read this series or up to this point.

I will say the one thing I haven't enjoyed about the series is Weber's habit of including passages from the perspective of characters that the reader has never met before just before they die in some horrible way. However, I understand that doing so shows the perspective of individuals on both sides of the conflict. These snippets provide the reader with empathy and demonstrate to the reader that war spares no one. That war is horrific, terrible, and not without cost.

I also like the overall message of the series: even if religion is set up by a lie, it won't stop God from seeping through the cracks (that's a paraphrased quote from one of the characters, I couldn't track down the original quote).
If you love science fiction, political intrigue, hundreds of characters, and military and naval themes, this series should be on your 'to read list'.
